John Whitgift Academy.

We have something very exciting planned for 2012 but its a secret at the moment. Its so special that we have support from Celebrity Chefs, Jo Pratt and Anjum Anand, Top retailers like Ken McMeikan - CEO of Greggs plc, Rick Banks - buying manager of ASDA, Jan Cox - Executive office M&S, Richard Stride - Head of quality TESCO and my friend Alan Titchmarsh.

Its unique, fresh, brand new and will engage all departments of the school. It starts in our school kitchen garden and will be a first not only at Whitgift but for the UK! - More info as soon as we can release it!

The king of gardening himself Alan Titchmarsh emailed me today (26th November 2010) to say this to the me plus the teachers and children of the project.

"I am so impressed with the developments at Whitgift - You're an inspiration. Keep on growing and enjoying it. Every best wish",

Alan.

Alan often takes a look at the work I am doing and to hear his words of inspiration really does make a project like Whitgift unique!

The inspiring communities fund has made it possible for me to develop a kitchen garden project with a difference at Whitgift School in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire.

New! - D T Brown have sponsored our fruit and vegetable seeds for 2012!

DT Browns Logo

Already we have strawberry plants growing in pots and a massive collection of seeds including Leek seeds on trail! We have Climbing Beans, Dwarf Beans, Runner Beans, Broad Beans, Peas, Courgette, Beetroot, Organic Squash, Carrots, Squash, Kohl Rabi, Turnip, Potatoes and more! Thanks D T Brown, its going to be a great year!

WoodblocX Raised bed.

WoodblocX kindly donated a wooden bed to the project. It was very easy to install and after filling it with an additional load of compost from Direct Aggregates in Scunthorpe we started our American Indian 3 sister bed. Take a look at the WoodblocX website they have many beds and solutions for your garden. We grew strawberry popcorn, runner beans and squashes in the one bed.

The students findings for 2011 are::
Courgette - 1m row gave us 3kg and took 11 weeks from planting to harvesting.
Sweetcorn - 1m row gave us 1.5kg and took 13 weeks to grow
Runner beans - 1m row gave us 7kg and took 13 weeks to grow
Squash - 1m row gave us 4kg and took 12 weeks to grow
French intensive gardening.

This planting technique is a little controversial, some say it works some say it doesn't but we just wanted to give it a try. The students took my outdoor tea cup and made an indentation in the soil by pushing the glass downwards. This makes the moisture in the soil come to the surface and then when the seed is placed in the hole, in theory the seed has more moisture to start growing with. The results speak for themselves really, the size of the beetroot is massive in the same length of time the much smaller beetroot had. Its a thumbs up for the French intensive way of gardening.

The students findings for 2011 are (French Intensive)
Beetroot - 1m row gave 10kg and took 12 weeks to grow
Beans.

Using "figs" we made pyramids in the triangle beds for the runner beans to grow up. This added instant height to the project and added lots of excitement even though we planted them in the late spring. Harvesting the beans was easy and we had yellow, green, black and red. We also grew French beans, broad beans and more. Then when the beans looked finished Skie and Shinnarra harvested the old beans and started to dry them out for planting in 2012.

The students findings for 2011 are:
Runner beans - 1m row gave 7kg of beans and took 13 weeks to grow
French beans - 1m row gave 2kg of beans and took 9 weeks to grow
Broad beans - 1m row gave 0.5kg of beans and took 12 weeks to grow
Roots.

Of course roots cover many vegetables and these have proved much fun to grow this year. Radish was a large hit as they grow so very fast and add instant colour to the salad dish. Carrots take a little longer to grow but the multi coloured ones are the best.

The students findings for 2011 are:
Carrots - 1m row gave them 4kg and took 14weeks to grow
Radish - 1m row gave them and average of 3kg and took 4 weeks to grow
Brassica's.

Brassica's feature well in our kitchen garden. Kohl Rabi and cabbage are the two favorites and they have been grown well, cooked and eaten. In fact after Katie took the Kohl Rabi home, cooked and eat it, she returned the next week wanting more. This is a testament to the students and their great work.

Others.

Our others section is more fruit and vegetables that are a little more of the unusual. White Radish, bright red Chard, yellow and red raspberries and much more. In 2012 we will be adding to the collection of what we grow and more pictures will appear in our portfolio.

Connoisseur.

Connoisseur fruit and vegetables can cover a range of things the students have grown but mainly they are the best looking and tasting fruit and vegetables in the School Kitchen Garden. Even if the crop yield isn't high, it doesn't matter because the taste will win all.

Potatoes.

We have had an enormous amount of fun with the potatoes. The best part of course was the harvesting but in the height of the summer they were about 1m tall out of the tallest beds we have so caused much interest. When they are lifted from the ground its pandemonium as each one is like a small prize for all the students efforts.
